Sleep Better - Keep Your Bedroom Neat & Tidy

July 01, 20212 min read

When it comes to clutter disrupting our sleep, our bedrooms could make the worst impact on our ability to get great rest. That’s because our bedroom is the spot where we need things to be quiet and comfortable in order to sleep. Bedrooms that are cluttered and chaotic not only affect our senses, they can affect our safety.

Keeping our bedroom neat and clean contributes to our mental and physical health. That’s why it’s important to get things in order to promote better sleep.

A Messy Bedroom Can Make It Harder to Relax

Having a messy room filled with clutter not only looks unsightly, it can affect our psychology. Even people who love everything out in the open for easy access need a sense of organization. There’s a tipping point between having a small mess here and there and things looking like a clothing and accessory bomb went off.

When your bed is unmade and the furnishings are covered in clothing, accessories, books, papers, food wrappers, water bottles, and miscellaneous, it can overwhelm the mind. Going to bed should be a relaxing time which isn’t easy when there are messes everywhere.

A Messy Bedroom Can Affect Your Health

Messy rooms tend to be dirty rooms. Having clothing that is soiled or in need of washing, coupled with dust, dirt, dander, and allergens can affect the air you breathe. Without proper ventilation, this can lead to respiratory problems or worsen breathing issues like sleep apnoea.

It's important to keep your room free of dirty clothing and bedding and regularly dust, disinfect, and clean surfaces. Be sure to get behind furniture and under the bed where a lot of dust and dirt can accumulate. Wash your bedding once per week and deep clean your mattress as recommended by the manufacturer.

A Messy Room Can Affect Your Safety

When we sleep, we are in a different state than when we are awake. We are not as alert or conscious as we are during the day. Making trips to the restroom or to attend to small children could lead to injuries when there is clutter and debris in the way.

Keeping your room neat and tidy reduces the chances of slipping, tripping, or falling and hurting yourself in the night.

Our rooms are directly tied to quality of sleep. Having a clean room with comfortable bedding, ambient temps, and a soothing environment makes all the difference when it comes to getting to and staying asleep. Be conscientious about your room and do your best to keep it neat and tidy.
